Isn't it one unit of weight = one transport plane?

basically one division one plane
and that division can be as big as you want it can have max paratroopers and it will still be carried by one plane

Indeed, in reality the C-53 carried 20-30 troops depending on configuration, in game they can carry up to 25,000 or so each.
And you thought that YOUR flight was crowded!

Is the number of runs dependent on number of planes? Or is it distance? I dropped the same five divisions on two occations, in one three were dropped in the first run, and the rest in the second, but in the other they were dropped one by one.

The ingame transport plane is not just one plane, it represents a fleet.
There is a reason why its the most expensive plane in the game by far, in reality transport planes are not more expensive than jet strategic bombers.

They are indeed more expensive than the others. A quick check of the files says that a type I transport costs 180 vs a fighter costing 22.So if your theory is correct a fleet of roughly 1,000 transport planes has the cost of roughly 8.2 fighters.

And you thought the F-35 was expensive...

Think how the poor paratroopers feel, either they fight 999 other people for a seat or their rifles cost as much as 3 of the airplanes that they are jamming into!

Maybe they fly Indian style
put soldiers on top of the planets
or attach a sky barge to planes where they put all the soldiers in

Having been in the 101st Airborne, I too am interested, but I think some of the comments here are going down the right road.
Pace of deployment seems to be based on the quantity of transports available. You can deliver ALL of your paratroops with just one transport, but they will be deployed more quickly with more transports.
Thus, to answer your question, one transport is enough for each Airborne ARMY you assemble.
My problem remains with the orders themselves. It seems to me that my paratroops land, then if possible, go back to the departure base to paradrop again, and again, and again, etc. Meaning, the ORDERS never clear, even though the units have deployed and fought, they still want to return to the still active order. Still not sure if this is my fault, but it seems that the program is doing that to me for now.
On that note, I would think that paratroops would simply drop the once, and the order for that unit would be terminated, since their drop has been done.

One transport plane for one division, no matter the size.

Check the division's weight in the designer. Each transport can carry 1 unit of weight afaik.
Also, convoy tech used to affect this calculation (because last minute coding) but I'm unsure if it still does.
One annoying thing I've found is that a single airfield is unable to perform more than one drop at a time, at least not simultaneously.

Sorry nope: one plane, one division. Thoroughly tested and done myself multiple times.

Must have been changed I recall testing it on 1.0 to different results.
Good to know it's now less convoluted.

What abour the size of the airborne division? The basic German paratroop template has just three battalions per division.

But why do it That way like that, when we now have granularity down to a single infantry squad(infantry equipment)?

Because there were originally no transport-planes intended for HOI4. It was supposed to be a mission/role for bombers but the forum went up in a collateral craze when this was publicly announced so PDS caved and added transports in (and the feautre probably didn't get the love it deserves as it's basically a late development addition).

That is probably the explanation, but damn, they just stick out like a sore thumb right now compared to other aircraft. Not only that, but they should at least be much more expensive per plane if going the abstracted route. Irl strategic airlift was/is hugely expensive.
